Ornate details, including an archway and original wood flooring, from nearly 150 years ago make this Italianate house with Gothic elements an architectural treasure that is unique to the Delavan area. Additional architectural elements are aired and scrolled brackets under the eaves, a polygonal oriel at the front, round arched double doors with teardrop windows, round and segmental arched windows with molded hoods, and porches featuring scroll details. This treasure, built around 1871, will be either given away free for removal to another site, demolished, or auctioned as separate building components by the City of Delavan.
The City of Delavan was accepting written proposals for relocation of the building by May 3rd. Written proposals were required to include the applicants experience with renovation and/or relocation projects, contractors proposed for the project and their written contracts detailing the expected relocation method, along with the proposed form of financial guarantee (either a Letter of Credit on a City approved bank, or a full cash escrow in the City’s bank account). The financial guarantee is $35,000 (the City's demolition cost) provided to the City until the house is fully removed from the property.
The property is now part of the Aram Public Library expansion and will likely become a parking lot. After the proposal deadline, the City Council decided to proceed with asbestos siding removal on the building, followed by the various building components being sold at auction. It is possible that the auction will be scheduled by fall of this year. In the meantime, interested parties should contact the City to determine if the building is still available for relocation. The City has offered the city-owned vacant lot at the northwest corner of Harrison Street and E. Wisconsin Streets as a free option for relocation of the house. The house is located in Walworth County on 116 S. 5th St.
