Branch Grove,home of BB&T founder

Built in the 1820s – 1830s, Branch Grove was the home of Alpheus Branch, the founder of Branch Banking and Trust (BB&T). This Federal style plantation house is 3000 sq. ft and is located about two miles outside of Enfield.

Some of the interesting features are original pine heart floors, wainscoting, the staircase and newel post, and most of the paneled doors. There are some additional mantels in storage. An older and smaller Georgian style house is attached to the rear corner of the building.

The cost to acquire Branch Grove is $9000. In addition, the house must be moved to a suitable nearby site in order to avoid demolition. Extensive rehabilitation requirements include new baths and kitchen, installation of all mechanical systems, a new foundation and chimneys, and cosmetic repairs. This house is not currently listed on the National Register. If it becomes listed, it will be eligible for tax credits.
