free 1907 Craftsman

This 1241 sq. ft. Craftsman with two bedrooms and one bath has leaded windows, bronze fittings, and solid wood floors. It is available for free and must be moved by the new owner to another property. It is just south of Hawthorne in the Mount Tabor neighborhood, located at 1924 SE 50th Ave.

Because of impending development, the house would have to be relocated at least one road away from the current location. Inner Southeast Portland would only be practical if someone had access to or bought an inexpensive lot. However, the move distance for this almost two-story high building should be kept within a 10-mile radius. Recent appraisals have valued the house with the current lot at $340,000. It is estimated to cost $40,000 to $50,000 to relocate and place on a new foundation and $80,000 to $90,000 to relocate and place on a full basement, using a distance of several blocks. There is also the need for upgrades that could run in the tens of thousands of dollars. Total costs could be at least several hundred thousands of dollars to move and renovate the house.

If not moved, the building will be demolished, most likely within the next several months. An abandoned building next to the house has already been demolished in preparation for several stories of a new SE 50th and Stephens Ave condominium development by developer Dennis Sackhoff and the Urban Development Group. The architect on the project is Don Sowieja of Myhre Group Architects. Some neighbors have expressed discontent with not having input into the design, scale, and massing of this and other controversial projects in Portland.
