This local historic landmark called the Michael White Adobe, older than the City of San Marino, is available for $1. It was the home of Michael White a.k.a. Miguel Blanco and; therefore, is also called the Miguel Blanco Adobe.

The house was built in 1845 on land then known as the Rancho San Ysidro. The mother-in-law of Michael White was Eulalia Perez de Guillen de Marine, who owned the old area of Rancho San Pascual that now includes Pasadena and San Marino.

This building is located at 2701 Huntington Drive; San Marino, California. It is on the campus of the San Marino High School. The school is planning an expansion of its swimming pool to include 12 lanes and needs to move this building in order to perform the renovations. The new owner must relocate the adobe to an appropriate site and rehabilitate the structure, while still maintaining its historical significance. Interested parties need to submit a detailed plan; including a description of the proposed site, the financial capability of the individual or organization, the ability to provide the building for educational or civic-related services, and a timeline for moving the building. The indicated timeline must include removal of the building from the present site between June 22, 2009 and August 7, 2009. The successful bidder must post a $1 million bond or other negotiable security that will be forfeited to the San Marino Historic District should the building not be moved within a previously determined timeline. January 30, 2009 is the deadline for submitting questions or the detailed plan.

Besides the age of the Michael White Adobe, it is representative of California’s Mexican past and the style and materials of building during that period. The original adobe section of the house was one story and a half. A two-story wing made of wooden ship siding was added and then razed at a later date. Over the years and during the major restoration in the 1950s, the floor and roof have both been replaced and a bathroom and kitchenette have been added to the original building. The building is locked and no one has been inside for five years, as there are problems with the walls cracking and termites. It is 1500 square feet and has one bedroom. Moving costs could be in the range of $300,000 to $500,000. If the structure is not moved, it faces demolition.
