Get a new house worth around $100,000 for half the cost, by participating in a program of the Shawnee Urban Renewal Authority.
This agency received $106,896 in stimulus funds in order to build a new energy-efficient home using Energy Star standards, although the building will not be certified by Energy Star. The house is planned to be built within the next few months as a two bedroom, single-family residence in a yet undecided location.
Applicants must be low-to-moderate income and a first-time homebuyer to qualify for the program. The selected family will pay a 3% interest rate loan to cover 50% of the building costs for 20 years. There will also be a silent mortgage on the other 50% that will become a debt if the home is sold or rented to anyone else. There is no required down payment.
