Durham, NC house

The current owner, Jeff Monsein, is offering a free house and $5,000 to help with costs of moving the house.

The Tate House at 1704 West Markham Ave was named after the first occupant, W. G. Tate of Imperial Life Insurance. Since then it has the been the home of mill supervisors during Durham’s manufacturing phase. It has also housed some of Duke’s faculty, being that it is located across the street from Duke University’s east campus. First preference for the new location is a neighborhood in or similar to Trinity Heights; next preference would be a neighborhood in the Durham historic district.

This house was built in the early 1920s. Its age is shown in structural problems like the cracks in the wall and a crumbling foundation. The repairs will also include new wiring, electrical work, and sheetrock. However, it does have hardwood floors that might be original. The deadline to make a firm commitment to move the house is February 8, 2008. After this date, the house will be torn down.
